Colin Firth really does a brilliant job at showing this on the screen as well; he is such an excellent actor and his performance had me crying, beaming, and, most of all, aching along with him.
Total class. Additionally, the way George's sexuality and his relationship is shown is truly fantastic. Although George and Jim's relationship is very important to the narrative, it isn't the main focus of the storyline, however it's definitely not compressed or put aside.
It's known to the audience that George is a gay man and is an important part of his identity while not taking over the whole film, much like in real life.
We see George as a three dimensional person, not a political statement or stereotype. I absolutely adore everything about it and it certainly is my favourite film.
Five stars for Tom Ford and for all the actors in this picture, it's utter perfection. Everything about this film is beautiful: the actors, the wardrobe, the sets, the story, the script, the music, the cinematography.
It's all flawless and incredibly elegant. Rather an astonishing feat from a first time director. Or not, once you realize Tom Ford is a renowned fashion designer associated with names like Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent.
Add to that terrific performances, first and foremost from Colin Firth who really should have won the Oscar he was nominated for then again, I forget who won it that year, so maybe all is as it should be , but also from the supporting cast including Matthew Goode, Nicholas Hoult and Julianne Moore.

It's a slow film and one for mature audiences, but it''s incredible lyrical without a single dischordant note. And a great film to watch again every once in a while and remind yourself about the importance of the little things and the joys of living in the here and now.
Highly recommended for all kinds of reasons. The DVD is very nice, both picture and sound quality are great. Subtitles are available for those who may need them.

I bought it out of curiosity, I had read good reviews of the book but never read it. I tried watching with an open mind in spite of disliking Colin Firth but it had no redeeming qualities for me - the acting was stilted and the characters, especially Firth himself as the lead, had no depth at all.

His response to the telephone coversation telling him of Jim's death made me gasp it was so real. I loved how the film portrayed real emotions in a realistic low-key manner.
I did find the part with Julianne Moore a bit long and would have liked more of his life with Jim, wonderfully played by Matthew Goode.
Nicholas Hoult was excellent too. A poignant, dignified and gentle film. First Tom Ford movie, Golden lion at the Venice film festival.
